week one:

Orientation and Observation

During this week, we were given two orientations before we proceed on our assignment. First, we had an orientation with the UPY academe. Then, the next morning, we had an orientation with the practicum school. We were introduced to our cooperating teachers. They also gave us the schedule and grade assignment. They also tour us around the campus and I was able to have a sneak peek at the pupils I will be handling. The next day, we started our observation. I was introduced to my students and there’s one thing I can say, they are so hyperactive. The kids are still shy to approach me but I'm really looking forward to knowing each of their stories. Also, during this week, we bought our first batik uniform. We quite had a hard time choosing because there are a lot of colorful and amazing choices. Friday, the first week, I was invited by my CTs to attend their school Christmas Party and I was a bit surprised because its already January but they explained that they celebrate it every January because most of the students went outside the country to celebrate Christmas with their family during December. On the celebration, students and teachers wear their batiks which looks really amazing. I had an amazing time with my students and some of them are slowly getting to know me.

week two:

 Teaching Assistant

week three:

 Teaching Practice

On the third week, I was scheduled to have my demonstration. I spent most of my day revising and preparing my demo. On my demonstrations, I am really glad because I received positive remarks from my CTs. To hear the words “We learn a lot from you” is so fulfilling. I am so glad because I was able to manifest the different pedagogical skills I acquire during my few years in PNUV. I am also glad because the kids were able to experience a fun and interactive discussion they were able to enjoy. We concluded this week by complying an evaluative report and had an evaluation meeting with the school. This is also the part where I need to say farewell to my students and friends for we are scheduled to go back to PH.

On this week, I started my take over teaching. I was assigned to teach Arts and Craft and Mathematics. I am also allowed to facilitate the kids and teachers. I really enjoyed this week because I was able to play with the kids, discuss with them some random stuff, and was able to contribute something during classes. My CTs also asked me to be in charge of the kids whenever they need to attend a meeting. During this week, the kids became closer to me. They even asked me something about the Philippines which they really enjoyed a lot. Moreover, the teachers, again, invited us to attend their mall show to pay tribute to the Chinese New Year. The show was really amazing. The kids really showcased their talents and I was also able to bond with the teachers in Mutiara. We concluded this week by eating Seblak, a very spicy Indonesian soup.

week four:

Reflections and Lessons Learned

During my demonstrations, I always remind myself that this is not a competition, but an opportunity to showcase your own pedagogical skills. I am here to learn and to somehow influence the pedagogical skills I learn from my home country.

On the first day of my internship, I heard comments about the students where I am assigned to. After hearing it all, I found it very challenging. At first, I doubt myself if I will be able to pull it off, but with the help of Ms. Jackie , Mr. Hengky, Ms. Yulia, Ms. Bella, and My Lord God,  I was able to overcome all the challenges I had with this class. After listening to their tips, I was able to get close to them and found out their stories. As a teacher, it is really important to know your student so that you will be able to address their needs and queries. As time goes by, I was able to know them more and that helps me a lot in making my lessons. This class is the most peculiar and diverse kids I ever handled. They challenge me to think outside of the box and do good in my demonstrations. I am so grateful to them. How I wish I will have more time to be with them. I am so thankful for the people I met on this journey. I am really grateful for them for they inspire me and make me appreciate my profession more.

Struggles are built in the nature of life. Conflicts are possible, but there is greatness if we let no obstacles prevent us from pursuing the right way and have the values we’ve chosen.
