CURRICULUM

Mutiara Persada is under two curricula:  The National-Plus Curriculum and the Cambridge International Curriculum. Implementing these curriculums strengthens the students’ global competence.

The National- Plus Curriculum was crafted by the Indonesian Ministry of Education. This curriculum was implemented by schools that offer education beyond the minimum requirement of the Indonesian accreditation authorities.

Cambridge International Curriculum promotes bilingual education which means the learners can work towards a Cambridge qualification through the medium of English while also following their own national curriculum.

LESSON PLANS

On the right side of this paragraph attached the lesson plan I made for my Pre- Demonstration and Final Demonstration Teaching in Mathematics. My cooperating teacher allowed me to use our university's lesson plan format because their own format of the lesson plan is still on progress.

Our university's lesson plan format is detailed tri-columned that includes Student's Activity, Teacher's Activity, and Philosophical Foundations.  Reflected on this plan is the list of the teacher's pedagogical techniques, expected learners' responses, and philosophical foundations or theories where the strategies and methods are anchored.

In addition, the powerpoint presentation I made for both my Pre and Final Demo is also attached on the right.

TEACHING PRACTICE

PROCEDURES OF TEACHING

I always start my lesson with something that can motivate them. I always make use of some songs or chants that is related to the lesson. It also helps me to give them a hint of the lesson to be discussed to slowly scaffold the idea to the learners. I also learned that good motivation is very important because it is where you get the pupils’ attention. Afterward, I proceed to activity. I sometimes divide them into groups for collaborative learning. In this part of the lesson, the pupils are really cooperating and working together to finish their task. After their activity, I then proceed to analysis where they will present their work and then check. After that, we will move on to abstraction, where the lesson is discussed further by asking questions. This is where students can slowly build the idea and connect it to what they already know. After abstraction, I then give them an application activity where they mostly show what they learned in the lesson. It is where most the output of the lesson can be seen and is related to real life situation. In conclusion, I gave students a short test just to measure If I met the objectives of my lesson.

To summarize, I make use of the 4 A’s lesson plan format to help me with my teaching procedures. This procedure includes Activity, Analysis, Abstraction, and Application. With the help of this type of lesson plan, together with the different educational innovations, the more the lesson can be called Student-Centered which leads to the 21st century and lifelong learning.

TIME MANAGEMENT & ORGANIZING ACTIVITY

Mathematics and Arts & Craft are the subjects assigned to me. Each subject has 70 minutes time allocation. During my planning of the lesson, I always consider the characteristics of the students that I observed during the first week. With the help of my observation notes, I was able to estimate the right amount of time for each part of my lesson.  I always make sure that the activity and application part of my lesson will have more time. Because of this, students will experience games, group activities, and simulations most of the time which makes the class interactive and fun. In addition, I also allotted enough time for analysis where both teachers and students will process the information that the learners got from the activities.

I always make use of the 4A’s (Activity, Analysis, Abstraction, and Application) lesson organization.  Activity is where I show them videos, songs, group activities and let students discuss or write about what they already know that is related to the lesson. Next is the Analysis part. This is the teaching part, where the new information is presented and processed. After the analysis is the Abstraction. On this part of the lesson, teachers will be able to identify if the students understood the lesson. Elaborative rehearsal is a memorization method that involves thinking about how new information relates to information already stored in long-term memory. Students are asked repeatedly about the answers and processes so they can have a greater tendency to retain information. Afterward, I will proceed to the Application where students practice what they have learned. In this part, I make use of game shows where there will be winners which students found challenging and exciting. After the 4 As I then proceed to evaluate where students are tested to see how much they have learned and determined if there are gaps in understanding.

PROBLEM-SOLVING

II-Pascal is composed of 21 pupils. Each of the pupils has distinct characteristics from each other. They are very hyper and have a very short attention span. Because of this, It challenged me to lay my A cards in lesson planning. I carefully manage all the materials and activity I will do to my lessons with consideration of my observation during the first week.

In every lesson I have, I make sure that there is a game where everyone can participate, and I saw that the kids are really looking forward to joining. I always tell them that they need to listen and behave so that they can join the game. I found it an effective way to manage them during the discussion. Although I still need to improve for a more conducive learning environment.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

There are several strategies that I utilize  for my classroom management:

•    I make use of their pointing system. Every time someone is misbehaving, I tell him/her that he/she will have minus points;

•    I use different claps. I make use of the different claps I learned from my on-campus training, like fireworks clap and amazing clap;

•    I also use their “all eyes on me” chant to  keep their attention back whenever I'm discussing something;

•    I use videos, group activities, and songs before I start the lesson to stimulate them for the new lesson to be discussed; and

•    I created game shows after the discussion to have an exciting and more challenging application of learning.
