SCHOOL'S GENERAL INFORMATION

Mutiara Persada International Standard School is funded and supported through the Mutiara Persada Foundation. This non-government school has strong sustenance from their stakeholders in the various activities that they have. Moreover, continuous checking and evaluation of the school’s performance, facilities, faculty, staffs, and students are made by authority of the said foundation.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT SYSYTEM

SD Mutiara Persada has classes from Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 2:30 PM. Two homeroom teachers are assigned to every grade level; each consisting of a maximum of 20 – 25 students. Subjects like Science, Mathematics, English, Mandarin, Bahasa, ICT, and others are taught in this school. Each subject has a time allocation of 35 minutes (minimum) to 70 minutes (maximum). It is also a prerequisite to the students in this school to have extra-curricular subjects, namely swimming, robotics, arts, taekwondo, and many more.

In addition, the school also promotes inclusive education which makes me respect all the members of the academe.

MATERIALS & OTHER LEARNING RESOURCES

The school is well-provided with facilities and other educational innovations. It has its basketball court, oval, swimming pool, computer rooms, library, playground, prayer room, and air-conditioned classrooms. SD Mutiara also provides open-access wifi to provide internet services whenever needed by learners and teachers.

The basketball court, swimming pool, oval, playground, and other equipment are used during their physical education (PE) time. This is where students perform and practice during their classes. The school also has a computer room with enough working computers, which students visit when they need to, especially during their ICT schedule where they learn animation and other computer skills. The air-conditioned library is an excellent place to study, with a variety of books readily available, including classical books, almanacs, encyclopedias, and subject books. Educational board games like chess, scrabble, and many more are also available. Students and teachers are free to go to the library whenever they want. Since the dominant religion in this school is Islam, the school has provided a prayer room for students to pray during prayer time. Moreover, the school provides air-conditioned classrooms with functional projectors and multimedia speakers that they can use during interactive class discussions.

The school really provides the needs of 21st-century learners for them to hone their 21st-century skills.

In my observation, Mutiara Persada uses two different measurements and evaluation system, namely, formative evaluation and authentic evaluation.

For the formative evaluation, teachers make use of student’s workbooks, chapter tests, and examinations. This type of evaluation measures more of the student’s comprehension and other cognitive related skills.

In authentic assessment, the students were evaluated by means of their valued skills that cannot be directly evaluated by traditional tests. Outdoor performances and pre-requisite extra-curricular activities are some of the school’s way to evaluate the kids. They provide a more realistic setting for student performance and quality of work.

With these types of measurement and evaluation system, the school was able to measure not just knowledge but the proficiency of the students in the various fields.

CURRICULUM

Mutiara Persada is under two curricula:  The National-Plus Curriculum and the Cambridge International Curriculum. Implementing these curriculums strengthens the students’ global competence.

The National- Plus Curriculum was crafted by the Indonesian Ministry of Education. This curriculum was implemented by schools that offer education beyond the minimum requirement of the Indonesian accreditation authorities. One of the objectives in this curriculum is to use English as a medium of instruction in some subjects instead of Bahasa.  This curriculum is the gateway for the implementation of the Cambridge International Curriculum.

Cambridge International Curriculum promotes bilingual education which means the learners can work towards a Cambridge qualification through the medium of English while also following their own national curriculum.

Based on the lesson plan shown to me, it is anchored on the competencies set by the curricula implemented. Also, the objectives of the lesson are reflected in the aims stated in their student workbook.

A sample lesson plan is attached to the right part of this paragraph.
